Gifts for the Healthy Food Lover

We love the fact that more and more people are being careful about what they eat. Reading labels, analyzing ingredients, opting for fresh whenever possible. . . . These healthy food lovers would love to get a gift that makes their food foraging easier, more fun and of course more delicious.

We’ve come up with a few ideas that aim to please the discerning cooks and eaters on your list:

1. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a CSA box full of fresh-from-the-farm produce. Log on to and type in the ZIP code of your recipient. There’s a nearby CSA farm practically everywhere in the United States.

2. The perfect gift for busy parents who still want to put something good on the table for their families: Robin Takes 5. The Food Network host of “Quick Fix,” Robin Miller does everything in fives—500 recipes, 5 ingredients or less, 5 nights a week at 5 p.m. Even a recipe like Cashew-Crusted Chicken with Roasted Jalapeño-Mango Chutney uses five ingredients and gets on the table quickly for a delicious dinner.

3. Make your own spicy nut mix! These two recipes can be used on salads, for pre-dinner nibbles or with fruit and cheese for a light lunch. Pour into a bell jar and tie with a ribbon.

Wheaty-Sweety Pecans

2 cups whole pecans

2 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon ginger

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

4 tablespoons coconut oil or light corn syrup

1/4 cup Kretschmer Honey Crunch Wheat Germ

1. Preheat oven to 350° F.

2. Cover cookie sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray parchment with cooking spray.

3. In heavy saucepan stir butter, sugar and spices; bring to boil. Add nuts and wheat germ; cook 3 minutes. Spread nuts in a single layer on parchment paper. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to cook evenly. Cool on baking sheet. (Extra wheat germ can be sifted with a flour sifter onto the nuts once they are out of the oven for a fun, crunchy texture.) Cool and break apart. Place in bell jar.

Spicy Holiday Nuts with Wheat Germ

2 cups mixed nuts

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup Kretschmer Honey Crunch Wheat Germ

Kosher salt and cayenne pepper to taste

1.) Simmer nuts in small pan of water for 5 minutes (do not boil). Drain nuts on paper towels for 45 minutes.

2.) In large pan heat vegetable oil. Stir in nuts until well coated. Lower heat and stir in confectioners’ sugar, brown sugar,wheat germ, salt and cayenne pepper. Mix well and spread on a cookie sheet to cool. Place in bell jar.
