Speed Scratch: Chocolate Desserts
You need an impressive dessert — fast! Maybe you volunteered to bring something to the dinner party on Friday (after a busy workweek), are having friends over for brunch or need to make a couple dozen sweet treats for your child’s holiday party tomorrow. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Speed scratch — adding your own touches to store-bought products for home-cooked goodness — works great with desserts, especially of the chocolate variety. Adding wheat germ for extra nutrition will make you feel even less guilty for not whipping up a batch from scratch.
Rich chocolate cookies are welcome at just about any event. Our Triple Chocolate Chunk and Wheat Germ Cookies start with a package of Krusteaz Bakery Style Triple Chocolate Chunk Cookie Mix. Adding almond butter and wheat germ not only gives the cookies more depth, but also added nutrition! Other tasty additions to these and other chocolate cookie mixes include nuts, cranberries, raisins and chocolate, butterscotch or peanut butter chips.
Quickbreads are called “quick” for a reason — but from-scratch recipes for these delicious treats can still take a while to mix and bake. For an easy and impressive holiday dessert, mix a batch of store-bought chocolate quick bread with 1/2 cup of chocolate mint-favorite chocolate chips and 1/4 cup Kretschmer Honey Crunch Wheat Germ. Once the bread has cooled, place it on a decorative platter and sift powdered sugar over it for a festive touch. Voilà!
Another speed scratch quick bread we tried substitutes Kretschmer Wheat Germ for all of the flour (1/3 cup) called for in the mix. The results? This cinnamon streusel quick bread got rave reviews and though you couldn’t taste the wheat germ, the bread was heartier and had more texture and nutrition.
Let’s admit it: Many of us think brownies made from a mix are just about as good as the real thing — especially when you add your own speed scratch touch. For adults, liqueurs such as Kahlua and Bailey’s Irish Cream offer delicious additions. Omit the water if the mix calls for it and add about 1/3 cup of Bailey’s or Kahlua to the mix. Adding a cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips takes these incredible treats over the top. For more kid-friendly varieties, add chips of any flavor to the mix, or try one of these 15 Ways to Jazz Up Boxed Brownies. Adding 1/4 cup wheat germ to the mix works with most add-ins and won’t even be noticed by your happy recipients.
Keeping a few boxes of your favorite chocolate mixes, along with tasty add-in ingredients, in the cupboard means you’re always prepared to create that last-minute dessert — even if the kids just want an after-dinner treat!
